Teaching Social Skills for Children and Young Adults
As much as we may not like to admit it, fitting in is important for building self-confidence and self-awareness. I run a group that focuses on teaching problem-solving skills when interacting with peers and adults, and then practicing these skills both at home and at school to see what works. For the parent or guardian, a summary report on the specific skills learned as well as feedback on their emerging social skills, such as their individual strengths and challenge areas. At the end of the sessions, I also provide a sheet of social skills tips to help identify where they best fit in with their environment and how to help them succeed as leaders, followers, listeners, or doers at home and at school.
Topics covered include:
• Dealing with Anger
• Maintaining the Give and Take of Conversation
• Recognizing Non-Verbal Body Language Cues
